Passion fruit growing on the vine
Origin · South America & Brazil The Basics

Nature's Most Fragrant Superfruit.

Known in Brazil as maracujá, passion fruit grows on a flowering vine of the Passiflora family, native to South America. Crack open its tough, wrinkled shell and you'll find a pocket of golden, seed-flecked pulp with one of the most fragrant aromas in the fruit world.

That pulp is tart, sweet, and packed with crunchy edible seeds rich in fiber and polyunsaturated fats. The flavor is bright and tangy, somewhere between citrus, guava, and tropical honey. Beyond its punch of flavor, passion fruit is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants that make it one of the most nutritionally complete superfruits on the planet.

Passion Fruit in Brazil

Brazil's Beloved Maracujá.

In Brazil, passion fruit known as maracujá grows on a flowering vine of the Passiflora family. Two varieties lead the way: purple maracujá, native to the South of Brazil, and the now more widely grown yellow maracujá, whose exact origin remains uncertain.

The fruit is a rich source of beta-carotene and B-complex vitamins, especially niacin, along with calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. It also contains passiflorine, a natural relaxing compound that unlike many calming substances isn't addictive.

Its sophisticated, pleasantly acidic taste makes maracujá a favorite across Brazil for juices, ice creams, and cocktails. At Pink Parrot, we use it as a tangy, aromatic layer that brightens every bowl.
